Hi Guys -
I apologize that I am not there today... but this is a good way to communicate as well!
Today you started class watching a video on the United Nations that would have reviewed the GOALS and the PURPOSE that we spoke about yesterday as well as an overview of WHY the United Nations was created.
I want you to take a minute with a partner to make sure you can explain the following concepts.
1. The reason the UN was created
2. The goal of the UN
3. The six branches
4. The role of the Security Council - who are the five members and why are they so significant?
5. What the UN does in the world.
If you are not able to answer all of these yet, that is okay - take a few minutes and review your information from yesterday.
Once you are comfortable with that information, then lets move on and take a look at what the United Nations does in our society today.
Head to the website: http://www.un.org/News/
Using that website:
AS A STARTER TO SEE HOW UP ON YOUR CURRENT EVENTS YOU ARE,
Take the INTERACTIVE QUIZ by selecting the link on the right hand side, mid way down the page under the video.
See how you do. Then:
1. Identify the 10 Major topics that the UN is concerned with (these have headings on the page - eg. Peace and Security.)
2. For each of those major topics, provide a very brief description of a current event that the United Nations is working on.
3. Of those 10 Major topics, write which YOU think is the MOST important topic for the UN to be concerned about and WHY.
4.Take a look at the "In Focus" Section on the top right of the page - which countries is the UN specifically focused on today? Provide a brief overview of what these countries seem to have in common.
5. Based on what you have explored, write a response to the following question
"Is it important in our globalized world to have an international organization like the United Nations? Explain and provide support for your answer".
