Yesterday we started a new competency. We are now examining the foundations of contemporary globalization. We looked at the three events that changed the face of the world and required a shift in thinking - World War I, Great Depression and World War II.
Today, we took a look at a clip from "Saving Private Ryan". After, I asked you to decide how the countries should rebuild after World War II. I was so impressed with the answers that you came up with:
- Create jobs through rebuilding
- Make agriculture a priority
- Organize a way to "get money"
- Lower international trade
- Elect new leaders and establish new governments
- Seek external help (ta da - the United Nations was established!)
Your answers were essentially the same as the representatives from the 44 member countries at Bretton Woods in 1944. Out of Bretton Woods, the United Nations was established, as well as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, and also the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
These are what we will be examining for the remainder of the week.
